I am an Hawaii High School Senior

The Dorrance Scholarship for first-generation students is a need-based award providing financial and academic support for Hawaii (Big Island only) high school graduates pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The award is renewable for a total of eight semesters (four years) of funding. Scholarships are renewed based on academic standing, participation in program events and activities and community service projects.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicants meet all of the following criteria:

  • Seniors in good standing who will graduate from an accredited
    Big Island high school
  • First-generation to attend college (neither parent holds a
    four-year degree)
  • Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • Verification of SAT or ACT test score
  • Admitted to the University of Hawaii at Hilo
  • Demonstrated financial need (completed FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov)
  • Reside on campus freshman and sophomore year
  • Agree to participate in all aspects of the scholarship program
  • Signed Dorrance Scholar Participation Agreement

Award

Up to $8000.00 annually, renewable. No more than 8 semesters (four years) of funding will be provided. Up to ten awards will be made each year. Awards will be announced no later than April 30.

Renewal

  • Attend all Program events, meetings and summer experiences
  • Register for and complete a minimum of 12 units per semester
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • Update FAFSA annually
  • Determined to be in good standing and eligible for continuation at the post-secondary institution
  • Demonstrated participation in 10 hours of volunteer service each semester
  • Submit a year-end report by June 1
  • Meet the terms and conditions of the Dorrance Scholar Participation Agreement
  • In addition to any other terms and conditions, the number and amount of all scholarship awards and renewals is contingent on the availability of funding
